They're pioneers, trendsetters and record blasters...
You've seen them spiritously scale all the seven summits, you've seen them take death-defying risks and cruise right into the history books...now get the inside scoop on what goes on emotionally behind the scenes for all your favorite mountaineers. Every famous mountaineer draws from a private emotional reservoir of power. So, apart from extraordinary personal skill, what makes a truly brilliant mountaineer or climber? According to many astrologers and numerologists, part of the secret to superior performance could be in the stars and numbers.
The prominence of earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), of Mars (the planet of sheer physical energy, original action and powerful athleticism), Pluto (the planet of extreme mental concentration, fearless determination and the ability to get up after a fall and try even harder) and Jupiter (the planet that rules personal confidence, a belief in one's abilities, sports and athletes) could shed some light on the question. The climbing and mountaineering communities have many heroes, heroines and legends. Let's look at the signs and numerological make up of a select group of some of the best mountaineers and climbers in the world and see what makes them such incredible forces in their fields.
This page is dedicated to those talented mountaineers who triumphed and succeeded in realizing their golden dreams, but more importantly, to those forgotten sherpas and mountaineers who perished while rewriting history, leaving behind a fearless legacy for all the ages to come.
"Therefore we are all, in some sense, mountaineers, and going to the mountains is going home." ~ Taurus Mountaineer and Writer, John Muir

Erik Weihenmayer
Sun in Libra
Moon in Libra
Birth Number 5
Destiny Number 2
It is an honor to place Erik on the top of this list. On May 25th, 2001, Erik Weihenmayer became the first blind man in history to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. At the age of 34, Weihenmayer is also one of the youngest people to climb all of the Seven Summits - the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. He completed this incredible accomplishment on September 5, 2002 when he stood on top of Mt. Kosciusko in Australia.
Erik is an inspiration to all who meet him. His birth chart shows that he is a fighter in every sense and never gives up. Born under the sign of equality, fairness and balance, Libra, he manifests its best qualities. Not only is Erik's Sun sign Libra, but so is his Moon sign. This produces in him a kind of leadership ability that is far more refined than other leaders in his field. Libra is a cardinal sign, which means that leadership skills are quite comfortably embedded in his personality. A Libra Moon also confers a heightened awareness of one's environment as well as others.
A former middle school teacher and wrestling coach, Erik is one of the most exciting and well-known athletes in the world. Despite losing his vision at the age of 13, Erik has become an accomplished mountain climber, skydiver, and skier. He has never let his blindness interfere with his passion for an exhilarating and fulfilling life. Erik's feats have earned him ESPN's ARETE Award for courage in sports, induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and most recently IDEA Award from the largest association of health and physical fitness professionals and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Glaucoma Foundation.
Another interesting fact about double Libra Erik is his Birth and Destiny Number combination. The number 5 is a highly active and restless number. And while this restlessness becomes a problem for most who try to get rid of it, he actually makes use of it productively and pushes himself beyond his limits repeatedly. His Destiny Number 2 shows us that he is a very sensitive human being who can feel the fears, pain and inadequacy of others, particularly those who do not express it and hide it. The number 2 makes him emotional, but with the help of the balancing sign of Libra, an emotionally well-balanced athlete.
When he was 13, his mother died in an auto accident at about the same time he lost his sight to the degenerative eye disease, retinoschesis. He was close to his mother and his Destiny Number of 2 indicates that he wishes she was with him. The 2 is a very maternal number and gets attached very easily to the purity in things and people. Erik has seen the difficult side of life and has overcome more obstacles than other people in his profession. This makes him an authentic and memorable athlete. Erik's irrepressible curiosity about life and his next adventure is a gift of the combination of the numbers 2 and 5. The 5 helps him speak about his achievements and the 2 helps him to do so humbly, without pomposity or superficiality.
Erik is truly living up to his Sun and Moon sign of Libra, as he teaches the world to learn to accept people with blindness and treat them with the same respect that others get. Libra always fights for fairness. The compassion of the 2 is evident in his work for blind children in Tibet. Learn more about this remarkable man who deserves our respect and is worthy of great honor.
"Mountaineers, however, always find in themselves a reserve of power after great exhaustion. It is a kind of second life, available only in emergencies like this; and, having proved its existence, I had no great fear that either of us would fail, though one of my arms was already benumbed and hung powerless." ~ John Muir
Himalayan Mountaineering
Ed Viesturs
Sun in Cancer
Moon in Aquarius
Birth Number 4
Destiny Number 7
Congratulations are in order! On May 12th, 2005, Ed Viesturs, 46, became the first American to climb all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks. Ed Viesturs' has been waiting 16 years to accomplish this incredible feat and is one of the world's premier high-altitude mountaineers. He is the first American, and 12th person overall, to summit all fourteen 14 mountains over 8000m (collectively known as the Eight-Thousanders). All these incredible climbs were done without bottled oxygen. Ed also has summitted Mount Everest six times, a feat that, excluding sherpas, has only been surpassed by one other climber. When asked why he is better at climbing without oxygen at altitude than other climbers, he replied in an interview "It just happens to be genetic. Luckily, I'm in the right sport. I was born with the genetics that allow me to climb at high altitudes, to acclimatize very well and to deal with the altitude. It's a combination of genetics and physiology, training and experience."
With his Sun in family-loving Cancer and his Moon in exploratory and bright Aquarius, Ed is a great combination of heart as well as skill. Annapurna, the 10th highest peak in the world at 26,545 feet, is known for its giant and frequent avalanches and terrible storms. It is considered one of the deadliest mountains in the world, with over 50 climbing deaths on its flanks. Careful and very aware of any possible risks, Ed has turned around twice on previous expeditions to Annapurna because conditions were not optimal. This sense of Cancerian caution (or shall we call it a powerful Cancerian intuition?) distinguishes him from many other climbers who would have gone straight ahead. Ed’s favorite saying is “Getting up the mountain is optional, getting back down is mandatory.” His family would concur without a doubt.
What pushes this amazing athlete to try harder and climb higher than any other mountaineer? An Aquarius Moon sign is symbolic of wanting to be different, to stand out in a crowd and be a pioneer, bowing to no ones rules but one's own driving passion, but the desire for accolades is admirably absent from his character, which is characteristic of the Moon sign of Aquarius. Aquarius is a fixed sign, which means that once he decides on a course, almost nothing will make him change his mind, this makes him super-determined and unflinching in achieveing his goals. The sign of Cancer grants him patience and great sensitivity while an Aquarius Moon sign gifts him emotional balance, which is crucial in dealing with that lunar-influenced moodiness that is a signature trait of Cancerians. Ed climbs without supplemental oxygen. He prepares himself to deal with the thin air by pre-acclimatizing, a technique he pioneered. Before tackling Annapurna, he spent several weeks on an easier 8,000-meter peak, Cho Oyu in neighboring Tibet, to ready his body. Annapurna is Ed's latest achievement. And the world has been watching.
In addition to Annapurna, Everest and Cho Oyu, the other towering peaks Ed has submitted are: K2 at 28,250 feet; Kangchenjunga, 28,169; Lhotse, 27,940; Makaku, 27,765; Dhaulagiri, 26,794; Manaslu, 26,758; Nanga Parbat, 26,658; Gasherbrum I, 26,470; Broad Peak, 26,400; Gasherbrum II, 26,360; and Shisha Pangma, 26,300.
Cancer is the sign of the family and Ed is eager to return to his home near Seattle and spend time with his wife and their three children. His family means as much to him as his career which is symbolic of a Cancer Sun and Aquarius Moon person. Let’s talk about Ed’s numerological grid. Ed’s Birth Number is Uranus-ruled 4 and his Destiny Number is Neptune-ruled 7. The 4 produces two desires in him; one is to want to change, improve or revolutionize (for example, his desire to blaze brand new trails in his career) and the other is to stabilize (to empower what he has built and to make sure that no one disturbs his legacy). He is clearly able to bring the best of both attributes to the table. His patience is symbolic of the earthiness of the 4 (the earth is ever patient) and his ability to plan ahead and dream the impossible is due to his Destiny Number of 7. The Neptunian 7 attaches him to his dreams and family powerfully, as does the Cancer Sun; his family is his emotional rock and primary sense of support and confidence. While the Birth Number of 4 pushes him to create a foundation, a legacy of achievement that other climbers can look to and be enthralled by. We wish the world’s most judicious mountaineer the best of luck and loads of congratulations at achieving his dream! Check out Ed's official website.
"I know that our bodies were made to thrive only in pure air, and the scenes in which pure air is found. There is not a "fragment" in all nature, for every relative fragment of one thing is a full harmonious unit in itself." ~ John Muir
Buildering
Alain Robert
Sun in Aries
Moon in Gemini
Birth Number 7
Destiny Number 2
Want to see a real life Spiderman? Alain is a solo urban climber, free climbing high rocks and up the flat, smooth glass surfaces of skyscrapers. Alain uses no tools or safety devices of any kind. Using only his bare hands and feet, Alain has scaled more than 70 giant structures around the globe including many of the world's tallest structures. Alain began climbing as a young boy, scaling rock cliffs in the area around his home. His buildering career began at the age of 12 when he forgot his keys and was locked out of his parents' apartment. Instead of waiting for them to come home, Alain simply scaled the exterior wall to his eighth floor home.
He polished his rock-climbing skills in the French Alps before turning to buildings. Because the authorities would not give him permission for such dangerous exploits, Alain Robert would suddenly appear, usually at dawn, on the side of a giant skyscraper in cities around the world where thousands of onlookers would stop in awe of what was happening. As a result, he has been arrested in various countries many times by police waiting at the building's top. The arrests and trials are little more than quick formalities and he is always discharged.
Alain has an excellent Sun/Moon combination for climbing. His Aries Sun sign makes him take death defying risks, while his agile Gemini Moon sign allows him to complement the perfect balance of his mind with his body. The need to climb may emanate from his airy Moon sign; air signs are happiest when they are flying through the ethers while the rest of us stand below trying to hook our jaws back on. With Aries as his Sun sign, this guy is going to break records all over the place; Aries will help develop his leardership skills.
Alain's well-developed arm and leg muscles ensure that he holds on to vertical surfaces, without an opportunity to rest, during long climbs, some of which go up to one hour or more. He is of short stature - 5 feet 5 inches, and this has provided him with nimbleness while climbing. In February 2003, he legally climbed the 656-foot National Bank of Abu Dhabi, UAE, watched by about 100,000 spectators.
In April, he scaled the headquarters of oil giant TotalFinaElf in La Défense outside of Paris to protest the invasion of Iraq.
Alain’s Destiny Number is a sensitive, Moon-ruled 2, which brings him the chance to use his laser sharp intuition on his climbs and meet the emotional demands of his body, while his Destiny Number of 7 allows him to wow the people below who watch him and introduce an element of mysterious artistry into his movements. There is a visual magic and an other wordly feeling about watching Alain scale those super high sky scapers. He suffers from vertigo, but still accomplishes the most difficult climbs in the world. His maternal Destiny Number of 2 makes him a dependable, loving father and husband. Alain Robert is married to Nicole and has three children. He calls his children first thing after he reaches the top of a building. His children also climb and practice with him; what an amazing climbing teacher they have in him! Hopefully they can follow in his footsteps. Check out some really fancy footwork on Alain’s official website.

Junko Tabei
Sun in Virgo (28 degrees)
Moon in Capricorn
Birth Number 4
Destiny Number 8
Junko Tabei has the honorable distinction of being the first woman in the world to stand triumphant on the summit of Mount Everest. She is a Virgo with a Capricorn Moon sign. Junko, petite but super-strong at only 4 feet and 9 inches tall, began climbing at the age of 10 at a school outing and got hooked on it. Little did she know that one day she would be the first woman to climb the seven summits. Junko's Birth Number is 4 and her Destiny Number is 8.
Her Destiny Number links up beautifully with her Capricorn Moon sign, which is ruled by Saturn. This double Saturn influence may have been what kept her going even when things looked very bleak for her when her all-woman expedition team ran into an avalanche as they neared the end of their climb.
Twelve days after this disaster, Junko became the first female ever to climb Mount Everest, opening the road for other women, from different countries to follow in her prestigious footsteps. Junko is a 4, which is ruled by the planet Uranus. Her daring and her will to survive even under the most horrible, life-threatening conditions come from the revolutionary and unstoppable planet Uranus which encourages its natives to push harder, work longer and defy all convention. Junko's Destiny Number is 8 and may be what gave her a chance to be a pioneer in her field, which up to that point, was a male dominated activity.
She proved that a woman does not have to be built like a man to be able to summit one of the biggest, roughest and most unforgiving mountains in the world, but that all she needs is the right training, a good sense of judgment and an irrepressible desire to do what was just a day before an unthinkable act.
A Capricorn Moon gives Junko a wise temperament, an ability to correctly assess the dangers and rewards that may be before her and also to be able to lead others to the top of the mountain safely and bring them back. Her Virgo Sun makes her approach mountaineering with a kind of duty to both herself and to others in her field. Virgo is the sign of service and she has certainly served her profession in the most admirable way possible.
"Fear not, therefore, to try the mountain-passes. They will kill care, save you from deadly apathy, set you free, and call forth every faculty into vigorous, enthusiastic action. Even the sick should try these so-called dangerous passes, because for every unfortunate they kill, they cure a thousand." ~ John Muir
Mountaineering
Paul Petzoldt
Sun in Capricorn
Moon in Cancer
Birth Number 7
Destiny Number 8
The late Paul Petzoldt is a legend in the world of mountaineering. Born under the strong and wise sign of Capricorn, his love of the outdoors and especially for the mountains of beautiful Wyoming have inspired many a rookie climber to excellence. His Moon sign was Cancer and its opposition to his Capricorn Sun sign indicates that even when faced with considerable opposition or difficulty, in life as well as climbing, he never gave up or chose an easier route (literally).
His Moon sign also shows us the he was a very sensitive man at heart, driven by feelings and emotion but seldom willing to show this to others, except his closest confidants. His Birth Number of 7 is in good contrast to his Destiny Number 8. The watery 7 attaches easily to earthy and strong 8 as water needs earth to flow on. The 8 also keeps the over-emotional characteristics of 7 in check.
The 7 shows us that his approach to climbing and more importantly, to the teaching of climbing was innovative, imaginative and a very emotionally involving experience for him. This 8 resonates with earthy Saturn, the ruler of his Sun sign Capricorn. No wonder he loved the mountains! He is probably the only person who ever climbed The Grand Teton, (part of the Rocky Mountain range dividing Idaho and Wyoming) in a pair of cowboy boots and lived to tell the tale.
A leader in the sphere of climbing, he lived up to the call of the 10th sign of Capricorn and established National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) for training individuals to guiding people on extreme hikes. "I had the desire not only to guide my clients but to teach them as well." And so he did. He sadly passed away in 1999 but we hope that wherever he is right now, that he is still climbing, with or without his cowboy boots!
"These men as a class are singularly fine in manners, though their faces may be scarred and rough like the bark of trees." ~ John Muir
Photographer, Mountaineer and Writer
Galen Rowell
(Partial text on career accomplishments courtesy of www.mountainlight.com)
Sun in Leo
Moon in Taurus
Birth Number 5
Destiny Number 9
Visual artist and story teller, it is said that Galen Rowell was to color photography what Ansel Adams was to black and white. With a Birth Number of expressive 5 and a Destiny Number of dynamic and active 9, Galen was a masterful blend of the twin arts of photography and climbing. His contributions to photography are so many and so varied that his prints are recognized the world over.
An accomplished and graceful rock climber, Galen’s images and writings tell a compelling story and pull the viewer into the heart of the image to be part of the magic unfolding in front of the lens. The 5 is a “wide-angle” number, which means that they can take in a panoramic view of life, the bigger picture, if you will, and its multitudinous experiences much more easily than other, more conventional or rigid numbers. Flexible and open-minded, a 5, especially a charismatic Leo 5, will naturally be attracted to vocations in which both the sign and the number can display their true talents in front of the world frequently.
Galen, a physically and mentally active 5, enjoyed the adventure aspect of climbing, while the nature-loving and patient Taurus Moon lent him a steady eye toward what was to be accomplished on each climb. A love of travel came naturally (5s are ruled by Mercury, the planet of travel and movement) as did a flair for carefully putting words together on a page and eruditely expressing his unique version of the unspoken but beautiful language of the natural environment. A Taurus Moon bestows a profound respect for the natural world and our delicate ecosystem; Taurus is an earth sign and the unspoiled terrain calls out to many Taurus Moons who feel responsible for the care and protection of the wild and precious habitats around us.
Expeditions took Galen to the North and South Poles and on more than 40 other international journeys into the mountains of Africa, Antarctica, Canada, China, Europe, India, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Patagonia, South America, and Tibet. Galen also made the first ascents of Cholatse, Great Trango Tower, and Lukpilla Brakk as well as attempting new routes on K2 and Mount Everest. He made the first one-day climbs of Denali and Kilimanjaro as well as a unique 285-mile winter traverse of the Karakoram Himalaya. Galen made frequent solo ascents of moderate free routes the High Sierra, as well as one-day ascents of big wall routes on El Capitan and Half Dome in Yosemite. This enigmatic Leo 5 was born to blaze trails.
In 1984 Galen received the Ansel Adams Award for his contributions to the art of wilderness photography. Writing and teaching are excellent vocations for most 5s and especially for Leo 5s who like to speak, share, teach, learn and then give back that wisdom and learning a hundred fold. Galen’s Destiny Number of 9 saturated the content of what he said with passion and emotion, so that a story was told in the most memorable way possible. The fire sign of Leo rules the heart, and when one views Galen’s landscapes of nature, one also enters into the phenomenal realm of pure emotion, the kind that is used everyday by nature to speak to us, but is seldom noticed by us. The central experience of Galen’s images creates in us an awe that makes us think, and once we begin to think, we also begin to feel. Both Leo and Taurus are intensely emotional signs.
In 1984 Galen received the prestigious Ansel Adams Award for his contributions to the art of wilderness photography. Galen shares a wonderful aspect with Ansel: Galen had a Leo Sun while Ansel had a Leo Moon. What an amazing astrological compliment to the duo. Sadly, Galen and his wonderful wife Barbara, his right hand, perished in an aircraft crash in 2002. The legacy he left behind still speaks to us through the images that he created, images that will remain, like his memory, evergreen.
"Here I could stay tethered forever with just bread and water, nor would I be lonely; loved friends and neighbors, as love for everything increased, would seem all the nearer however many the miles and mountains between us." ~ John Muir
Mountaineering
Reinhold Messner
Sun in Virgo
Moon in Libra
Birth Number 8
Destiny Number 8
Reinhold Messner is a strong force in the competitive world of professional mountaineering. He is responsible for the first solo climb on an 8,000 meter mountain, the first alpine style ascent on an 8,000 meter mountain, he was the first to go without supplemental oxygen to the top of Everest, the first to climb Everest solo, the first to make a traverse between two 8,000 meter mountains, the first to climb all 14, 8,000 meter mountains...lots of amazing firsts, don't you think? Wow. And if you saw his Birth and Destiny Numbers, you'd be wowed again.
Reinhold is a double 8: his Birth Number is 8 and his Destiny Number is also 8. He is a Sun sign Virgo with a Moon in friendly and sensitive, literary Libra. Virgo is an Earth sign and the number 8 resonates to earthy Saturn. This guy was born to break records. Most of his focus, determination and strength come from the 8s in his numerological grid.
Reinhold is also a very serious personality. He began climbing at the tender age of 5 when the rest of us couldn't even balance an ice cream cone with two hands. Being one of the most talented and driven mountaineers of his generation, climbing came at a great personal cost for Reinhold. In 1970, he lost his brother when they were engaged in their first Himalayan expedition to climb Nanga Parbat (the Naked Mountain in Hindi).
This was one of the most terrifying ordeals of his life. He came very close to a complete mental collapse after discovering that his brother was dead and had to amputate six of his toes and several of his fingers tips due to severe frost bite. The number 8 must have created in him a fierce desire to live and beat the odds, which he did.
The next year, Reinhold returned for his brother Gunter, but tragically never found him. The mountain began to haunt his dreams. Despite this ordeal, he proved himself to be a great and accomplished mountaineer. Often, it is people who have the support of the planet Saturn, who are able to fight against every calamity, including death and personal loss and come out victorious on the other side. Saturn is the planet of karma, and those who understand its sometimes harsh lessons and mysteries, can never be defeated. Reinhold Messner is one climber who has proven this.
"A fine place for feasting if only one be poor enough. One is speedily absorbed into the spiritual value of things. The body vanishes and the freed soul goes abroad..." ~ John Muir
Mountaineering
Joe Simpson
Sun in Leo
Moon in Taurus
Birth Number 4
Destiny Number 1
Mountaineer Joe Simpson has gained worldwide acclaim through his book Touching the Void. The book takes us into his amazing journey: a climbing expedition to the summit of Siula Grande, in Peru, with his friend Simon Yates, via the almost vertical west face.
Joe is a Leo with a Taurus Moon sign, which means that he is very fixed in his temperament and once he decides upon a course of action, almost nothing will keep him down. But Joe was also about to undergo the biggest test of his life. Disaster struck on the descent of Siula Grande. Joe slipped down an ice cliff and landed awkwardly, smashing his leg into his knee joint and breaking it. The pair, whose trip had already taken longer than they intended due to bad weather on the ascent, had run out of water and gas (which could have been used to heat ice and snow) and needed to descend quickly to their base camp, about 3,000 feet below. Leo, as a fire sign, is associated with leadership qualities that inspire awe. What happened next pushed Joe right into the history books.
Joe and Simon proceeded by tying two one hundred and fifty foot long ropes together and then tying themselves to each end. Simon dug himself into a hole in the snow and lowered Joe down the mountain on the 300 feet of rope. A second disaster struck however when Simpson was lowered over a 100 foot overhanging cliff and left dangling in mid-air. Simon could not see Joe, but felt all his weight on the rope, very slowly pulling Simon down the mountain. He held on for about an hour but was eventually forced to cut the rope, dropping Joe into a crevasse. This is where the best qualities of earthy Taurus and fiery Leo kicked into action full throttle. Circumstances were forcing Joe to give up and accept defeat. But there was a reservoir of strength still left in this amazing man’s heart.
The next morning, Simon descended down the mountain alone, and found the cliff. He realized what must have happened to Joe and to his horror saw the crevasse below. He was certain that Joe must have died in the crevasse and descended down the rest of the mountain alone, his spirit heavy with many burdens.
Joe, an incredible combination of the faith of earth (Taurus) and the power of fire (Leo), had survived, despite a 100 foot fall and broken leg. He eventually climbed out from his landing spot on an ice bridge to the bottom of the crevasse, and crawled out back onto the glacier via a side opening, all with a broken and aching leg. From there, he spent three days, without food and only splashes of water from melting ice, crawling and hopping five miles back to the base camp battling excruciating pain. Almost out of energy and hope, he reached the base camp a few hours before Simon intended to leave the camp to return to civilization.
What is amazing, is that as a 4, Joe could still maintain a sense of purpose and re-direct his quickly decreasing energies toward finding a way back to camp. The number 4 is ruled by the renegade and outlaw planet Uranus, which is regarded as very emotionally controlled and logical. Yes, delirium is common in conditions as horrendous as these, but Uranus never allows any 4 to give up. In fact the more a 4 person is tortured and troubled by circumstances, the more doors you close in a 4's face, the more doors they will kick down and burst through, and they will defiantly rise up and snatch back the control over their lives. When thinking of the 4, one can envision a cube, a square or a brick. This number of unshakeable foundations, is rock-steady and totally dependable, especially in the face of deathly adversity.
Simpson's survival is widely regarded by climbers as amongst the most amazing pieces of mountaineering lore in history. We can attribute his physical strength to Joe himself but his emotional and spiritual strength is a gift to him from two of the most powerful signs in the zodiac family as well as the faraway planet of Uranus, which graces anyone with even a little strength an enormous cradle of persistence, power and faith.
"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while care will drop off like autumn leaves." ~ John Muir
Rock Climbing/Bouldering
Chris Sharma
Sun in Taurus
Moon in Aries
Birth Number 5
Destiny Number 1
Chris Sharma, now a world-class climber, was only 11 when he announced to his dad that he was going to be a professional rock climber some day. And he did just that. At the young age of only 14, Chris won Phoenix, Arizona's most prestigious bouldering contest, the Phoenix Bouldering Competition, now known as the Phoenix Boulder Blast. The very next year he successfully accomplished his first 5.14c-rated climb, which until recently was the ultimate level on the American rating system. From then on, people knew how very special this talented youngster was and success naturally followed.
Born under the Earth sign of Taurus, Chris has showed a deep understanding of the sacredness of nature because Taurus is an intensely emotional and nature-loving sign. Taurus people love the earth, the feel of it and like being close to the most natural environment that they can live in. How did he become the leader in his profession at such a young age? In order to answer that question, we might take a look at his Aries Moon sign. The combination of the stability and determined attitude of Taurus, when seen in conjunction with the daring, charisma and risk-loving nature of adventurous Aries, clearly tell us that he is a rare climber and will go far.
If his Aries Moon ever dares him to take a risk that is best left alone, he will instead heed the caution of his patient Taurus Sun sign. His Moon sign will help him take calculated risks while his Sun sign will make him shine in front of the world.
Now 24, he has accomplished a lot and his fans will attest to the fact that they expect more wins and firsts from him every year. Chris has a Birth Number of 5 and a Destiny Number of 1. The 5 brings a healthy curiosity in literature, art, music and travel. An interest in the natural world is also common with 5s as well as the lightning-fast mental gymnastics that are an unseen part of rock-climbing and bouldering.
His Destiny Number of 1 shows a desire to excel, grow and intellectualize what he feels, write about it or communicate it somehow through words. He is here to teach us not only how to be better climbers, but to recognize and appreciate the different ways climbing can change us and allow us to evolve emotionally. In order to spread the message about climbing, Chris has set up a fund to teach youngsters about it, which is just one more way his Taurus/Aries combination chooses to give back to the climbing world. We wish Chris lots of luck and hope to see him win again this year in Arizona!
"But Shasta is always at home to those who love her, and is ever in a thrill of enthusiastic activity -- burning fires within, grinding glaciers without, and fountains ever flowing." ~ John Muir
Free-Climbing
Lynn Hill
Sun in Capricorn
Moon in Leo
Birth Number 3
Destiny Number 3
Lynn Hill is a pioneer in the sport of free-climbing and has a great fan following in the climbing world. Young girls, especially, marvel at her abilities and talent and wonder if they will ever be like her. From 1986 to 1992, Lynn Hill was one of the world's top sport climbers, winning over 30 international titles, including five victories at the Arco Rock Master. Even though the demands and rigors of climbing are great and in the past, were thought to be mostly suited to males with more upper body strength, Lynn has proven the fact that even a petite woman, with smaller hands than a male but a superior sense of balance and excellent coordination skills can climb the toughest routes and accomplish a feat that no man has ever been able to repeat.
She is credited with the incredible feat of free-climbing Yosemite's famous 3000 foot Nose in 1993 and bettering her own record the very next year by climbing the same route in only 23 hours, half the time in total darkness. When this became news, the climbing world new that a star was born.
With her Sun in achievement-oriented Capricorn and her Moon in Leo, Lynn is bound to wow people. The earthy Capricorn makes her give her undivided attention to her work and allow her to seriously test herself, and her Leo Moon brings her outstanding achievements worldwide attention. The Leo Moon, in particular, brings out the star in athletes. There is a more expressive side to Lynn as well. Lynn's Birth and Destiny Number is 3. This shows us that she functions under the influence of a strong belief (the 3 is ruled by Jupiter which rules belief-systems) in herself that never wavers and never lets her give up for even one second.
The Saturn-ruled, Capricorn element is sure the allow her to comfortably be the first to break records, but it also indicates that she is humble about her success and very mindful of what she can or cannot do. Her idea of her own abilities is very clear and she will not be moved by what others say that she can accomplish or not. Emotionally, she is very stable under pressure, as well as being somewhat immune to flattery. Saturn makes her suspicious of what the world says is good and valid, and she will be more likely to make that judgment herself.
The double 3 factor is sure to push her into situations where she is called upon to voice her opinions about the equality between the genders with regard to climbing and the expectations the world has of the abilities of each. Fairness and equality will draw her emotionally and there are surely more books that she will write that we will get to read. Lynn will use the written word (books), physical action (climbing) as well as her voice (speeches) to bring to light the beauty, grace and dedication involved in climbing well. She may be successful in helping people understand the demanding but emotionally rewarding sport of climbing and show the world how it can find the deep spirituality hidden within it.
"Sit down in climbing, and hear the pines sing. So savage and inaccessible at first sight; yet so easy to find one's way. No conscious effort. No dangers to tell about for all seems a grand, smooth song." ~ John Muir

Sir Edmund Hillary
Sun in Cancer
Moon in Taurus
Birth Number 2
Destiny Number 2
Sir Edmund Hillary is a most remarkable man. Not only because of his record breaking feat in 1953, but because of his numerological grid: he is a double 2. Born in 1919 in New Zealand, Edmund grew up with a deep respect and passion for mountains. A beekeeper by profession, he indulged in his love of climbing in the New Zealand Alps and then moved gradually toward the final frontier in mountaineering: the unforgiving but hauntingly beautiful Himalayas.
Along with sherpa Tenzing Norgay, Edmund reached the summit of Mt. Everest; the highest mountain in the world, at 11:30 AM, on May 29th, 1953, with the Moon quite aptly placed in sports-minded Sagittarius. A milestone had been reached in the history of expert mountaineering. Edmund has a Sun sign of watery Cancer and a Moon sign of earthy Taurus. This earth and water combination is very telling. Earth energy (the same energy a mountain is made from) provides a person with an unshakeable faith, tenacity and stability, while the energy of water gifts a person a certain emotional latitude through which to merge themselves with another’s deep pain, and encompassing another’s experience as their own. The key words here are open sympathy coupled with a quiet strength.
Cancer is a soft and sensitive sign that can pick up subtle emotional changes and impulses in other people. When this ability is combined with the persistence and steady nature of Taurus, you have a man who thinks everything out very carefully and plans meticulously. Earth signs can never be pushed into anything. 'I am a person of modest abilities, but I have a great deal of determination. And once started on a project that I want to do, I don't give up easily.' says Edmund in an interview. Spoken like a true and dependable, earthy Taurus Moon. Ever tried pushing a mountain?
Interestingly, Edmund also has a 2 for a Birth Number and a 2 for a Destiny Number. These identical numbers point to his Cancer Sun sign, as all three are under the direct and powerful influence of the faraway but influential Moon. Cancer makes a man perceptive and emotionally wide open, and because the number 2 does the same thing, one can only imagine the surges of the rhythms of the Moon in his personality. Protective of what is his and mindful of his privacy, Edmund is a very unique man. Sadness and depression may be something he privately battles and as is the case with most Cancer males and females, he will be close to at least one female in his life to whom he will look upon as his only emotional support system (his wife June).
As time went by, Edmund became more and more concerned with the welfare of the Nepalese people. In the 1960s, he returned to Nepal, to aid in the development of the society, building clinics, hospitals and 17 schools. There is a pronounced need in Edmund, to take care of or nurture, or aid and strengthen some part of society that others have chosen to forget. Cancer natives are maternal by temperament. This nurturing is an instinctual activity and he does this from the very core of his heart. It heals him as much as it helps others. He is an amazing and graceful combination of modesty and purpose, of focus and passion.
"...All the rocks seemed talkative, and more telling and lovable than ever. They are dear friends, and seemed to have warm blood gushing through their granite flesh; and I love them with a love intensified by long and close companionship." ~ John Muir

Dean Potter

Sun in Aries
Moon in Taurus
Birth Number 5
Destiny Number 1
Dean Potter is one of the most famous rock climbers in the world. He is the only person to free-climb Half Dome and El Cap in one day, an astonishing effort of over sixty pitches of high-end Yosemite free-climbing. In Patagonia, Dean shocked the alpine world with three unprecedented solos of the biggest peaks. He started with a free solo of the Supercanaleta on Fitzroy, and followed it with the Compressor Route on Cerro Torre, becoming the first to solo both peaks.
He topped it off with the first integral ascent of Californian Roulette on Fitzroy, a route that had been tried since 1969. At home in Moab, Utah, Dean cleaned up two longstanding desert projects. First with his wife, Steph Davis (see profile above), he freed the Tombstone, logging over a dozen fifty foot whippers. In another bold, rope-stretching pitch, he fired "Concepcion," the hardest crack in Moab.
As a Sun sign Aries, it is very natural for Dean to be the first in his field. Aries is the sign of the bold pioneer, who bravely ventures forth into unknown territory, taking in one challenge after another. But while Aries loves a hint of danger, his Moon sign of Taurus makes sure that his every climbing move is perfectly calculated and mapped out in his brain. Aries loves to take chances, but Taurus keeps a watchful eye over Aries without curtailing its creativity. Taurus provides the precision groundwork and support for Dean, while fiery Aries supplies the physical energy and stamina to keep his body climbing for hours. Aries lets him fly, while earthy Taurus brings him back down safely.
His Birth Number is 5, which indicates an inner restlessness, which Dean constructively transforms into a pure geometric dance on the rock. The 5 will help him work out difficulties with lightning fast agility, while his Destiny Number of 1, pushes him into a leadership role. Both the 5 and the 1 are highly intellectual numbers, and in most people, the impulses of the brain/mind are more readily trusted before the feelings of the heart. But Aries and Taurus are emotional signs which sometimes allow feelings to supercede thoughts. It is this delicate juggling act between thoughts and feelings that brings out the best in Dean, making him a good mix of emotion and intellect.
A Taurus Moon makes Dean sensitive to people, to music and literature (the latter two are ruled by Taurus), and especially to his environment and to the natural world. Taurus is designated as the sign of the protector of nature (John Muir was a Taurus) and creates a desire in him to find ways in which the purest manifestations of the natural world can be expressed through the act of climbing.
Both the fiery Aries energy as well as the airy 5 essence create a person who needs to constantly be in motion. Movement, communication and the cognitive act are governed by Mercury, as is speed. But in Dean's case, that attraction to pure movement has to serve a purpose, it has to mean something and lead to something greater (Taurus finds security in permanence and is a reflective earth sign that questions the significance of everything). For this to be achieved, Dean can rely on his ability to write, teach and speak, which are also natural vocations for a 5 and a 1.
In the last decade Dean has helped popularize slacklining. Recently he free soloed the infamous Lost Arrow highline, in both directions. As one of the most innovative climbers in the world, Dean hopes to use his big wall and alpine skills in combination with his new obsession, BASE-jumping, to help climbing evolve into another dimension.

Sun in Scorpio
Moon in Scorpio
Birth Number 4
Destiny Number 7
She's beautiful, she's smart and she's indubitably one of the most brilliant rock climbers of her generation. In the last decade, Steph has set standards in every type of climbing. She has free-soloed (no rope) up to 5.11+. She has climbed huge new routes in Baffin Island, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Patagonia. She is equally at home at high altitude, aid climbing, free climbing, speed climbing or bouldering. She is the only American woman so far to summit Fitzroy in Patagonia. She was also the first woman to summit Torre Egger. Recently, Steph became the second woman to free climb El Capitan in a day, climbing it in 22 hours and fifteen minutes, just one month after first freeing the route, Free Rider, big wall style.
Her Sun and Moon are both in the magnetic 8th sign of Scorpio. The rock-solid stability of the number 4 and the double Scorpio vibration influence a person positively and other people find this combination easy to look up to and instantly trust. True to her Birth Number 4, Steph Davis is indeed a powerful and unique personality. A desire to feel the cold rock with her hands, a need to push her body's limits and take frequent but calculated risks are also trademark qualities of the planet Uranus which rules her birth number 4. She is indeed an intense, focused individual and may appear serious on the outside. Her sense of imagination comes from the number 7, her Destiny Number, which could make her an innovative writer, artist, photographer or musician.
Steph's Moon in Scorpio gives her a firm control over her emotions as well as an incredible sense of persistence. The planet Pluto will never give up once it finds a cause worth its full attention. This Moon position brings an intense, spiritual nature. When the originality of earthy 4 combines with dreamy qualities of watery 7, it is a magical mix. A true Scorpio, Steph is an excellent judge of people and their hidden motives. Scorpio likes to know the unseen value of things and people. No one will push themselves harder or longer on a climb than her, once she zeros in on a project. Once she decides on something it will be hard to change her mind (the 4 is ruled by the Aquarian/Uranus vibration, which is fixed in habit and temperament, giving her an air of dependability).
Emotions (the domain of the Neptune-ruled 7) play an essential part of her life and her 4 is sure to help her balance them effectively. In the larger sphere of life, the world will often call on her dependable nature and ask her to be a rock to others. While a 4 will gladly help the weak, they will also dream of a life of total and true freedom that is free of fear and limits.
Steph is an inspiration to young female (and male) climbers who marvel at her record-breaking feats and hope to someday, with dedication and practice and be as talented and fearless as her.
"The time will not be taken from the sum of your life. Instead of shortening, it will indefinitely lengthen it and make you truly immortal. Nevermore will time seem short or long, and cares will never again fall heavily on you, but gently and kindly as gifts from heaven." ~ John Muir
